Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
John Collins was a mercer and merchant in Swansea. He had two sons, John who took Holy Orders and Charles who became a prominent Swansea surgeon and Alderman. The Reverend John Collins ([c. 1740]-1813) was Rector of Oxwich from 1772 until his death in 1813. He was also admitted as Rector of Loughor in the same year. In later years he held the livings of Penrice, Nicholaston and Llanrhidian. His son John (1783-1854) also took Holy Orders and held the living of Ilston and after his father's death became the Rector of Oxwich and Nicholaston. In turn his son William Lucas Collins (1815-1887) became Rector of Cheriton. The Collins family well known within the area and in Swansea exercised a powerful influence over church life in Gower for many years. These papers contain deeds and document relating to the Collins family from their origins in Carmarthen through to their influence in Gower church life.

The records were originally held at The Royal Institution of South Wales, Swansea. From 1966 onwards the records were moved to the library in the University College, Swansea in consignments. They were transferred to West Glamorgan Archive Service in the Spring of 2004 as part of The Royal Institution of South Wales Collection.
