Scope and Content

Settlement prior to the marriage between Robert Melville Grindlay of Berners St, St Marylebone, a captain in the East India Company's military service, and Maria Susanna Commerell, eldest daughter of John William Commerell esq of Strood, Sussex, and his wife Mary (nee Bosanquet). Christopher John Anstey esq of Hertford St, Mayfair, John Commerell esq of Strood (only brother of Maria), William Day esq of 'Brazen Nose College', Oxford, and Richard Debary esq of Lincoln's Inn Fields are named as trustees and 3rd parties to the agreement. Maria Susanna Commerell stands to inherit a third share in an annuity paid out of the interest on over #36,000 invested in various government stocks. Grindlay will also contribute #10,000 (by instalments) and #1,000 invested in EIC stock to the trust. Tripartite indenture, 9 pages, signed and sealed by all parties, witnessed by William Seymour of Margaret St, Cavendish Square, Robert Collett Payne and George ?Tilson (Seymour's clerks), duty stamps. Endorsed in pencil: '(Anstey)'.
