Scope and Content

Of some inhabitants of Leeds concerning the incorporation of the borough by letters patent in 1626. The petition is in defence of the proceedings of the original petitioners of 1626, who are here said to have been 400 clothiers and a multitude of other inhabitants whose object in obtaining the charter was `reformacion of Clothing, abuse in takeing apprentices and the disorders amongst the poore'. the prosecutors, to whom this answer is a rebuttal, have alleged the incorporation of 1626 to be by a clique unsurported by the clothiers or others of the town.
