Scope and Content

Stephen Waterhowse to John Mattison at Okewell in Birstall parish in Yorkshire. I pray you (by inquiry) learn out (so well as you can) the sufficiency (or insufficiency) for his worldly estate of Mr. Morton of Leeds. He is a clothier or merchant in that town partner with Mr. fflesher a merchant who dwells in St. Nicholas Lane, London. They two deal in Northern cloths which they send into Spain and into other places beyond the seas. Inquire of this Mr. Morton with as lettle noise as you may by such as you think are best acquainted with his affairs what his ability and estate is thought to be... my cozen Jonas, or Ludowicke may perhaps procure you (also) some light therin. Tell your mistress that Dr. Bancroft archbishop of Canterbury died the second of this month and so my cozen Lister: also tell my cozen Lister that this day his brother the doctor of London and I did ride up the Thames in our boats.... I have lodged hitherto at the Temple but now am removed to the banckside by reason of my cozen Jorg Wa[terhouse] of York is come to London whose chambers and lodging I had till he came.... Mrs. Milner commends her to your mistress....
