Papers of Andrew Hutcheson 1706-1707, butcher

Scope and Content

Account for meat supplied to William Johnstone, 3rd Earl of Annandale 1705-1707

Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Hutcheson was a butcher, fl 1706-1707, who apparently supplied meat to the Earl of Annandale.

William Johnstone succeeded to earldom in 1672, becoming the Third Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. He, at sometime, attended the University of Glasgow, but he does not appear to have graduated from there. He nominally supported the Jacobite Revolution, but joined The Club of Jacobite Malcontents. He was imprisoned in connection with the Montgomery plot but was restored to favour after making a confession. He was created as Lord of the Treasury in 1693. He was pensioned for services in connection with the Glencoe enquiry. He was a Scots representative peer who opposed the union. In 1701 he was created the first Marquis of Annandale. From 1701-1711, he acted as the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly, as well as the Lord Privy Seal of Scotland in 1702. He was appointed as the President of the Privy Council from 1702-1706, and was knighted in 1704. He held the position of joint secretary of state for Scotland in 1705. In 1714, he became Keeper of the Great Seal. He died in 1721.
