Scope and Content

  • Notes on British Fishes, dated 1830-1840, about 380 pages. Each species is entered on a separate page.
  • Notes on British Birds, dated 1830-1840, about 170 pages, one species per page.
  • 'Fauna Cantabrigiensis', with 164 numbered leaves, giving observations of wildlife in Cambridgeshire: Mammals (1), Birds (19), Reptiles (99), Fishes (105), Molluscs (121).
  • 'Entomologica Cantabrigiensis', 3 volumes, each 100-150 pages. It is a Catalogue of Cambridgeshire Insects in the Cabinet of the Rev. L. Jenyns, which were donated to the Cambridge Philosophical Soceity in 1855 and were later transferred to the University Museum of Zoology. It lists species of Coleoptera, Crustacea, Myriapoda, Arachnida.
  • Annotations in 'Notes in A Systematic Catalogue of British Vertebrate Animals', published in 1835.

Administrative / Biographical History

Leonard Jenyns (1800-1893) changed his name to Leoard Blomefield in 1871. He studied at St John's College, University of Cambridge 1818-1822. He set up the Museum of the Cambridge Philosophical Society together with John Stevens Henslow. He was vicar first at Swaffham Bulbeck (1827-1852), afterwards in Bath. He left a large collection of shells, a library and a herbarium to the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution.

Access Information

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.

Acquisition Information

The papers were donated to the University Museum of Zoology by Jenyns himself in January 1869.
