Alltud Eifion Papers

The collection consists of a bound volume of 161 papers - letters to and from Alltud Eifion and other family members, 1830-1861, various receipts for Tyddyn Iolyn, 1754-1821, details regarding the payment of tithes in the parish of Ynyscynhaearn as well as the papers of Owen Jones as Overseer of the Poor for the parish, 1829-1844.

A petty cash book, 1828-1863 and rent book, 1729-1784 for Tyddyn Iolyn.

A survey of the parish of Ynyscynhaearn for 1823 with the names of tax payers, and an assessed taxes book for 1854.

A sunday school minute book for Brynmelyn (C. M.) Chapel in Treflys, Caernarfonshire 1819, 1824 and 1827.

A photocopy of a volume of hymns, englynion, elegies and verses by Alltud Eifion.

Robert Isaac Jones, also known as Alltud Eifion, was born in ?1815 in a village near Tremadog, Caernarfonshire. He was a poet - in particular an excellent composer of englynion. He was also a chemist and a publisher.

As well as being the author of several works on Welsh folk-lore, he was also the editor and publisher of the journals Y Brython and Baner y Groes. Amongst his other publications are Y Gestiana, 1892 and Yr emynydd Cristionogol, 1889.

Although he came from a strong Methodist background, Alltud Eifion was a fervent churchman and a Conservative.

His father, Owen Jones, and grandfather, John Jones, were tenants of Tyddyn Iolyn, Ynyscynhaearn, Caernarfonshire which was owned by the Rhiwlas estate and later by W. A. Madocks. His mother, Gaynor Jones died in 1862. These papers reveal that Owen Jones acted quite frequently as Overseer of the Poor.
