Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Frederic Septimus Leighton (1800-1892) was a doctor, as was his father James Leighton. James emigrated to St Petersburg in 1805 and became the physician to the Czarina. Consequently, Frederic Septimus inherited sufficient wealth that he didn’t have to work to support himself and his family and they lived abroad for much of the time.

He was the father of (Lord) Frederic Leighton, the artist, who was briefly enrolled at University College School (1840-1841). UCS was founded in 1830 by University College London (UCL) and was based in Gower Street although it later moved to Hampstead. Former pupils of UCS are known as Old Gowers.

Eton College, a public school in Eton, Berkshire, was founded by Henry VI in 1440-1441 and largely educates boys from the upper classes. The precise background to this manuscript is unknown.
