Joseph Rowntree, Arrochar Hotel, Loch Long, to his mother Sarah Rowntree

Scope and Content

They are very comfortable, the large hotel was full so they have found humbler accommodation; will proceed next to Fort William; sure Julie will have told her of their doings until 3 day, on 4th day they left Scale Hill for Cockermouth, saw Pardshaw Crag from the road, the quiet of Cockermouth somewhat disturbed by railway extension; onwards to Carlisle, the train was burdened by sundry volunteers going to a shooting match; breakdown in a luggage train between Carlisle and Glasgow, nearly 9 when they reached their journey's end, 'we saw the locomotive laying on its side besides the rail'; 'The approach to Glasgow in the dark is rendered impressive by the numbers of iron furnaces whose flames pouring out at the chimney tips cast a fine glare over the country &reminded us of some of the scenes which we have been reading in the early books of Paradise Lost'; found rooms at the Waverly Temperance Hotel; next day took their places for Loch Lomond and enjoyed fine weather; Julie is a good deal amused with the Scotch, 'they say such odd things & in so queer a way & the peasantry are often dressed in such an outlandish style', saw a child being watched over in a barrel; supposes Hannah will have returned home from her London expedition.
Short postscript from Julie requesting cards.
