Scope and Content

Title 'The British Export Magazine' sporadically omitted from covers some of which designed by Ett. Occasional editorial comment re-introduced as of February 1952. Thinking Ahead feature retained, also Index to Advertisers and New British Trademarks. Contents indexed, with short trilingual summaries. New regular features on cars, and on Britain's Role in the Air, introduced in 7/1952.

1952 July

No 7/1952. Omitting British Export Magazine logo, cover has a mosaic motif to complement main feature on Mosaic Prints, inspired by Arts Council exhibition. Other features on contemporary furnishing and carpets, and new regular reports on the Car in Britain and Britain's Role in the Air. Background is Britain focuses on style and scholarship in Oxford and Cambridge.

1952 Aug

No 8/1952. Cover by Ett. Lead feature on Prints (dress and furnishing fabrics). Articles on woollens, velvets and knitwear. Air travel and cars continue. Article on National Wool Textiles Export Corporation's efforts to promote British textiles at Canadian National Exhibition includes lists of suppliers.

1952 Sep

No 9/1952. Introduces new colours to be promoted in Coronation Year of 1953, first such occasion since invention of synthetic dyestuffs in 1856. Special report on London Couture, with sketches by Ett of models from Morton, Hartnell, Stiebel etc. Feature entitled Milling Around Lancashire describes a tour of the mills and their products, modelled by Barbara Goalen. Article on household textiles lists stockists.

1952 Oct

No 10/1952. More examples of Coronation Colours. Lead feature on Beautiful Materials shows (named) fashion models posed in fine fabrics and photographed by Jay. Article on Resort Fashions. Britair reports on Farnborough Air Show.

1952 Nov

No 11/1952. Opening article on leather precedes Fashion in Cars, and articles on various individual fabrics. Feature on natural and synthetic fibres, as seen through a microscope. Britair reports on the Silver City car ferry service.

1952 Dec

No 12/1952. Cover by Ett. Opening feature on fabrics shown to the Queen at recent Private View of Haute Couture models and fabrics. Feature entitled 'Inspired Pottery' describes the Staffordshire Potteries, illustrating their work and the individual craftsmen involved. Feature on Penguin Press, developments since 1935. Britair reports on Air Service Training at Hamble.
