Scope and Content

Title 'The British Export Magazine' sporadically omitted from covers some of which designed by Ett. Occasional editorial comment re-introduced as of February 1952. Thinking Ahead feature retained, also Index to Advertisers and New British Trademarks. Contents indexed, with short trilingual summaries. New regular features on cars, and on Britain's Role in the Air, introduced in 7/1952.

1952 Jan

No 1/1952. Editorial maintains that "trade continues despite crisis warnings". Fabric Highlights continued from AAD 1/24-1987 (No 12/1951). Special feature, devised by Frank Henrion on Display Faces showing new photographically printed letter founts. Articles on rainwear, contemporary furniture, and the motor industry.

1952 Feb

No 2/1952. Contents editorially introduced.Feature on nylons (stockings), articles on furnishing laces, leather, and wholesale fashions. Background is Britain miscellany resumed, with special contribution on Plain English by Sir Ernest Gowers: examples listed alphabetically, and related to commercial usage.

1952 Mar

No 3/1952. Editorial on 'Our visit to Australia', which absorbs bulk of this issue, including Thinking Ahead. Long reports on Australian places and people, also lists of British exporters. Article headed 'Colour and Couture' illustrated from Spring collections, London and Paris.

1952 Apr

No 4/1952. Issue opens with the Background is Britain, then focuses on Our Visit to New Zealand, subject matter and treatment following format of previous issue on Australia. Also articles on luxury tweeds and cashmeres, and on current fashion trends.

1952 May

No 5/1952. Contents briefly introduced. Main feature entitled 'Let's Dress Like Men' by James Laver, then keeper of Prints and Drawings at the V & A: illustrations mainly of Elizabethan dress. Articles on knitting yarns and fashions, and a selection of fabrics, clothes and accessories in black and white.

1952 June

No 6/1952. Editorial rebuts rumours of reduction in magazine's page sizes and introduces cross-section of displays at the British Industries Fair. Background is Britain features Badminton Horse Trials, with complementary article on country clothes. Promotion for British Nylon in the 'New Elizabethan Age'. Article on 'English Women's clothes in the Present Century', based on newly published book by Dr C Willet Cunnington.
