Scope and Content

Issues generally shorter. Colour used for "art" features (as in 2-1956) and in many ads, but less frequently in textile and fashion surveys. Contents indexed, and translated summaries in Buyer's Guides. This regularly included, also Index to Advertisers, Trade Names and The Car in Britain. Informative content of Thinking Ahead reduced, and Gentlemen's Relish replaced by random miscellanies. Covers mainly by Ett, that for 5/1956 by Osbert Lancaster.

1956 July

No 7/1956. Lead feature on British Cottons for 1957, introduced by Director of Cotton Board Design Centre, Manchester. Designs from several manufacturers, also swatches of Everglaze materials and some made up models. Heading 'Keenly Priced' covers London wholesale ready-to-wear, plus "Couture Casuals" from Digby Morton.

1956 Aug

No 8/1956. Issue focuses on Scotland, with main feature on the Scottish textile industry. 2 page article on current exhibition at V & A of new windows for Coventry Cathedral, with some details in colour. Promotion for Tootal fabrics, dress and furnishing.

1956 Sep

No 9/1956. Opens with illustrated report on Royal visit to the Western Isles. Features on Export behind the Scenes, Watchwords on London Couture, with couturiers' choice of fabrics, and on BOAC Fashion Flight to Nigeria. Report on visit to Brussels home and workshop of Gustave van Geluwe, tailor and art collector. Articles on children's wear and furnishing fabrics.

1956 Oct

No 10/1956. Opens with 10 page article on the vagaries of fashion entitled 'After a fashion ...' and written by Toni del Renzio, sponsor of lectures on Mass Communications held at I.C.A. in London. Feature entitled Ready to Fly - Ready to wear uses BOAC's flights to S.Africa as setting for women's wholesale fashions, Promotions for British Nylon and Warner's furnishing fabrics.

1956 Nov

No 11/1956. Expanded review of The New Cars from Britain, followed by articles on leather goods, resort wear in cotton, and clothes for teenagers. Illustrated (b/w) survey of evolution of Heal's own-range furnishing fabrics, 1946-1956, and promotional feature on Terylene, with material swatches.

1956 Dec

No 12/1956. Opens with survey of new British worsteds and woollens, followed by feature on London's shirt makers. Article on relation of current fabric trends (in mohair, jersey, crepe etc) to present fashions. Rainwear for men and women featured in Proofed Quality; survey of Beautiful British Toys heralds British Toy Fair to be held in Brighton in February 1957.
