Circular

Scope and Content

Circular issued by Francis Walmsley and John Owen, honorary secretaries of the Association. Circular dated 15 May 1834 announcing meeting of general practitioners on 20 May 1834 at Mosley Arms Hotel, Manchester to convey to parliamentary committee opinions expressed in attached declaration. The declaration is a long critique of the existing system of medical education, criticising the prevalence of unlicensed medical practitioners including quacks, retail druggists and female midwives; calls for a 'National Faculty' to confer medical diplomas for various specialisms, need for more uniform medical examinations, better qualified medical teachers, and the lack of accountability of the governing bodies of chartered and collegiate medical corporations; and a shorter period of medical education for medical apprentices.

The circular is addressed to 'Thomas Windsor, surgeon, Piccadilly'.
