Scope and Content

Goitre is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Goitre may be caused by iodine deficiency; a diet lacking in iodine causes the thyroid gland to overproduce protein hormones causing swelling. Goitre also occurs in the condition called Graves' disease, in which there is plenty of iodine but the gland is overactive. In this case the enlargement is accompanied by excessive production of thyroid hormones.
