Administrative / Biographical History

David Rutherford Dow was born in Crail, Fife in 1887. He studied medicine at the United College, St Andrews, graduating in 1911 with a M.B., Ch.B. with distinction. He worked in hospitals in Dundee and London, and then joined his fathers practice in Crail. In 1912 he gained the Diploma in Public Health.

In 1913 he was appointed as a part-time assistant in Anatomy in the United College where he later became a part time lecturer. During the First World War he was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps..

In 1925 he was appointed to the Cox Chair of Anatomy at University College Dundee. In 1942 he married Dr Agnes Morton, and in the same year he became the acting Head of Department in St Andrews, a role which he held until 1946.In 1959, after his retrial, St Andrews University awarded him an honorary LL.D.

D.R. Dow died 12th November 1979. During his career he did much work on the occlusion of the coronary arteries, while his M.D. thesis included pathological findings in blood vessels. He was elected a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
