Administrative / Biographical History

On 30 December 1838 a public meeting was convened to establish an English Independent Church, and on 11 June 1840 the foundation stone was laid. The Church opened for worship on 4 May 1841 with the service conducted in English and Welsh. The Church held its last service in this building during November 1968. It was subsequently demolished and a new Church built nearby with a first service held in November 1970. Soon after the union of the Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England led to the formation of the United Reformed Church and in October 1974 Market Square took part in the first United Service with Hope Church. Market Square United Reformed Church merged with Hope Church in 2005.
