Administrative / Biographical History
The University of London (later University College London) came into formal existence on 11 February 1826 with the signing of an elaborate Deed of Settlement. It was agreed to raise a substantial sum of between £150,000 and £300,000 by the selling of shares of £100 each. The shareholders were called "Proprietors".
