Scope and Content

These records were received as a gift as part of accession 4034 in October 1995.

William Potts was responsible for printing Banbury's first newspaper "The Banbury Guardian" which started out as a monthly in 1838 and was refounded as a weekly in 1843 when he was Mayor. Potts was advertising a circulating library in 1844.He was a Unitarian and one of the leading lights in the local Reform Party. William Potts was succeeded by his son William jnr who handed on the paper to his son John, who wrote the first edition of A History of Banbury.

This mixed collection contains a number of items personal to the Potts family, together with ephemera collected by one or several of its members over an extended period.
