Scope and Content

Lists of landholders, tithe particulars, poor rates, rate assessments and valuations for the various parts of Cambridgeshire.

MS.Add.5717: Chesterton, Cambridgeshire: list of landholders, with details of acreage and tithes due, c. 1838, 14 folios.

MS.Add.5718: Chesterton, Cambridgeshire: composition particulars for tithes, with lists of sums due for the poor rate and other impositions, c. 1838, 32 folios. There is an undated letter from 'R.H.' to an unidentified recipient at folio 26.

MS.Add.5719: Chesterton, Cambridgeshire: schedule corresponding to the tithe award, 'for the purpose of shewing the Separate Quantities Total and Tenure of each Estate', c. 1838, 13 folios. Details are given in parallel columns, with the names of proprietors listed in alphabetical order.

MS.Add.5720: Chesterton, Cambridgeshire: tithe rent charge books, 1839-1840, 54 folios: (fo. 4v) Tithe Rent Charge Book for the parish of Chesterton, 1839, showing landowners, occupiers, description of land and the amount of rent charge; (fo. 25) 'Chesterton Tithe Rent Charge Appt. 1840'; (fo. 26v) Tithe Rent Charge Book for 1840, arranged similarly; (fo. 44) apportionment of rent charges on estate of devisee of Mary Benson deceased, 1840; (fo. 48) lists of freehold and copyhold estate of Mary Benson deceased, 1840.

MS.Add.5721: Comberton, Cambridgeshire: tithe rent charge book, 1847, 55 folios. The book is arranged by fields and proprietors, and separately for freehold and copyhold estates. There is a memorandum signed 'R.H.' and dated 28 May 1847 at folio 50.

MS.Add.5722: Comberton, Cambridgeshire: draft of a tithe apportionment, c. 1847, 16 folios.

MS.Add.5723: Comberton, Cambridgeshire: fair office draft of the poor rate, 1841, 16 folios. The details are arranged in parallel columns by fields, followed by an alphabetical list of propietors. The assessment is certified by Thomas Utton and Robert Wright, and witnessed by Isaac Honeywood and Joseph Maguire, 16 December 1841.

MS.Add.5727: Newton, Cambridgeshire: rates assessment by Thomas Utton, 1841, 25 folios: 'Assessment of all and singular the occupations of estates in the parish of Newton in the county of Cambridgeshire for the purpose of founding Poors and other Rates', signed and certified. The assessment is arranged in parallel columns by fields, followed by an alphabetical list of occupiers.

MS.Add.5728: Fen Ditton, Cambridgeshire: inclosure award reference, 1807, 8 folios: reference to proprietors and premises on the inclosure award map of the parish of Fen Ditton, Cambridgeshire.

MS.Add.5729: St Giles, Cambridge: reference book, 1854, 8 folios. The book is arranged in parallel columns, the first containing the names of occupiers.

MS.Add.5730: Cambridge valuation by R. Harwood and J.R. Mann, 1856, 80 folios. The valuation is arranged in columns under printed forms. On a flyleaf is a copy of the articles of agreement between Richard Harwood and John Rolfe Mann of the one part and the Guardians of the Poor of the Cambridge Union of the other, 2 July 1856.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1856 the Poor Law Guardians in Cambridge resolved upon a survey and valuation of rateable property in the parishes of their union. The survey was carried out by Richard Harwood and John Rolfe Mann. Its findings form MSS.Add.5730-5745. An earlier assessment of land in Cambridgeshire, MSS.Add.5717-5729, was partly the work of Thomas Utton.

Acquisition Information

MSS.Add.5717, 5720, 5721 and 5725 were purchased from Mr G.J. Smith, 1911; MSS.Add.5718-5719, 5722-5724 and 5726-5745 were purchased from J. Whitaker, 1913.
