Administrative / Biographical History

This company was incorporated in July 1913 to exploit the agricultural, peat and coal resources of land in the Hatfield area. Most of this land was purchased from the principal shareholders, William L Jackson, Baron Allerton of Allerton Hall, Leeds and Sir Thomas Isaac Birkin of Ruddington Grange Nottinghamshire. The other two directors were, initially, F S Jackson, the younger son of Lord Allerton and Philip Birkin. Lord Allerton (1840-1917), whose wealth derived from a Leeds leather-tanning business, was Conservative MP for North Leeds from 1880 until granted a peerage in 1902
