There are a number of cross references between the travel diaries and the very earliest correspondence between Philip Larkin and Jim Sutton [ref. U DP/174/2]. The wartime diaries contain various newspaper cuttings from `The Daily Mail', `The Times', `The Sunday Times', `The Observer', `The Birmingham Post', `The Mercury', and `Truth' (the source is not always clear). Many of these cuttings are of speeches made by leading politicians in the war years, including Chamberlain, Churchill, Hitler and Goebbels. Sydney Larkin also kept cuttings of letters by prominent thinkers and writers. Several of these are noted as they occur.
