Papers relating to the North Dock Abandonment Act 1928, 1913-1971. Swanseas North Dock was built in the 180s out of a bend in the River Tawe near to the town. The course of the river was straightened by the creation of the New Cut, and its former course turned into the North Dock, which was opened in 1852. By the 1920s, following the opening of larger docks to the east of the River Tawe, the North Dock was largely redundant and the Great Western Railway Company, its owners, proposed to close it. This resulted in the passage of the Great Western Railway (North Dock Abandonment) Act, 1928. The dock closed to shipping in 1930 and the upper part was filled in, leaving the North Dock Basin open until 1969, when it was filled in. New roads were built and the site eventually redeveloped for retail.S/EA/10/hub
