Administrative / Biographical History

Caernarfonshire Court of Quarter Sessions was responsible for maintaining the County Gaol, re-built in the 1780s. William Henry George was appointed as Governor of the County Goal in 1837; he was dismissed in 1848, to be replaced by John Dixon. Plans for a new Caernarfon County Gaol were approved by the Secretary of State in 1864. Dixon was dismissed as Governor in 1848.
