Scope and Content

This collection consists of Ginsberg's correspondence; research notes and correspondence relating to Ginsberg's books articles, reviews and papers, including 'The Material Culture and Social Institutions of the Simpler Peoples', 'Dialogues on Metaphysics', 'Sociology', and the preface to L T Hobhouses 'Morals in Evolution'; research notes and lectures on subjects including logic, religion, morals, ethics, social psychology, and the influence of environment and heredity on race and class; papers and correspondence concerning university administration and examinations, relating predominantly to the University of London; Correspondence with L T Hobhouse and papers relating to his life and works and the Hobhouse Memorial Fund; miscellaneous papers and publications on sociological subjects including mental illness and race relations; and collected articles on sociological subjects by other authors.

Administrative / Biographical History

Morris Ginsberg, 1889-1970, was born into one of the smaller Lithuanian Jewish communities of the Russian empire. His first language was Yiddish and as a Talmudic scholar he was educated in classical Hebrew. However he quickly mastered English when he migrated to England to work in the business of relatives in Manchester whilst preparing for entry to London University. He entered University College London in 1910 to read for a degree in philosophy and obtained his MA in 1915. He was a temporary lecturer at LSE from 1915-1916, and Lecturer in the Philosophy Department at UCL in 1921. He became an assistant in the Sociology Department at LSE in 1921 and a Lecturer in 1924. He became Martin White Professor of Sociology in 1929, succeeding Hobhouse, and held this chair until 1954. As Professor Emeritus he taught in the School until 1968.
