PAPERS: Compiled as a result of a claim by Captain R.H. Roberts / Richard Roberts that there was a form of partnership between him and William Thomas and a dispute about contracts, shares and remuneration.
The bundle includes a memorandum detailing the vessels William Thomas and Co., with William Thomas as sole member of the firm, was involved with.
He lists, in chronological order, all the vessels he became interested in as shareholder and consequently chartered and was involved in the management of, and those he bought for himself and other friends as co-owners and similarly had transferred to him and them, or built for him and them, of which he had the sole control and management of.
The bundle includes transcriptions of all the correspondence on both sides between the two men and is therefore a detailed record of the transaction of shipping business, particularly the building of vessels as the correspondence was very detailed and daily, and as well as the building included the equipping, crewing and cargo.
There is also some news of men and ships.
The transcripts include the start of their business relationship when he was recommended by William Thomas, shipbuilders, Amlwch with whom he had served until forced to retire on ill health grounds and correspondence when R.H. Roberts was supervising the building of vessels including the County of Merioneth, S.S. Empire and Kingdom.
The dispute includes some about payment in and for shares and a percentage for capital he brought in for some new vessels and his involvement with the Principality, Havelock and Menai and includes some financial papers of the latter two.
Also agreements for the building of vessels by Doxfords, Sunderland and R. and J. Evans, Liverpool.
Also copy from 'Ventures in Sail' about this.
