Alexander Davidson (1818-1895), alumnus of Marischal College, 1832-1833, 1834-1836, joined the family firm of D. & P. Davidson, then entered various partnerships, finally in 1870, with James Garden establishing the firm of Davidson and Garden. He held, amongst many public offices, those of chairman of directors of many major local companies and Commissionar of Supply for Aberdeenshire; he was also a member of the council of the New Spalding Club.

James Garden (1812-1884), alumnus of Marischal College, 1826-1829, was admitted as Guild burgess of Aberdeen in 1863. In 1843 he established the firm of Murray & Garden, which in 1870 joined in the firm of Davidson and Garden, which merged with Milne, MacKinnon and Peterkins on 1 Jan 1990, forming Peterkins solicitors, Aberdeen.

The archive was surveyed by the NRA(S) in 1961 (Survey no. 0051), but not all of the collections mentioned in that survey were deposited in the University. Some were returned to their owners; some were retained by the firm; and some were not found at time of deposit. A number of collections not surveyed in 1961 were, however, deposited.
