Administrative / Biographical History

Caernarfon Probate Office was established in 1858, taking over responsibility for the proving of wills from the Diocese of Bangor. It was closed in 1928. The main records (wills and copies) were transferred to the National Library of Wales and Bangor Sub-Registry respectively. In the course of its work, the Probate Office had accumulated various company and charity records, which were transferred to Caernarfon Record Office. These include papers relating to Welsh Bill Posting Co. Ltd, Dr Morris Charity for the education of poor boys of Llanrug and Caernarvon, Caernarfon Poor Law Union, Caernarfon Cottage Hospital, Caernarfon Union Slate Quarry, and Caernarfonshire Sanitary District.
