Administrative / Biographical History

James J MacLehose (1857-1943) was born in Glasgow to James MacLehose, publisher and bookseller to the University of Glasgow. He married Mary Macmillan the daughter of Alexander Macmillan, publisher in London, in 1896. MacLehose was educated at the University of Glasgow obtaining his Master of Arts degree in 1878. He was Managing Director of Robert MacLehose & Co Ltd, printers to the University of Glasgow. He also held the positions of President of the Federation of Master Printers and Allied Trades of Great Britain and Chairman of the joint Industrial Council of Printing and Allied Trades of United Kingdom (1921-1922 ). MacLehose was a member of the King’s Bodyguard for Scotland, Royal Company of Archers, the Board of Referees (Finances Acts), and the Advisory Council Science Museum as well as a Trustee of the National Library of Scotland. He edited several volumes on Scottish History and Archaeology and was the editor of Scottish Historical Review (1903-1928 ).
