  • Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was the first General Superintendent or bishop of American Methodism. Born near Birmingham, England, he was sent by John Wesley to work in North America in 1771. From then until his death in 1816 he travelled extensively throughout the eastern United States and effectively established Methodism as a leading Church.
