Scope and Content

From [Kingswood] to [Sarah Gwynne junior]. He is happy once more among his 'dear Colliers'.

There was no messenger yesterday from Garth. He would be rather concerned if he were not convinced of Mrs Gwynne's kindness and honesty. Reference is made to [Henry] Thornton's mistake in not sending the draft marriage settlement to Garth. If it had been sent to Bristol, the Gwynnes would have received it long ago.

Should Charles defer his journey to London until Whitsuntide? He will discuss this possibility with his brother tomorrow, and will certainly endeavour to persuade John to go to London in his place.

Spiritual matters are discussed.

Sunday afternoon

They had 'sweet fellowship' today. Charles 'was drawn out in prayer for all the troubled burthened souls; & he smiled upon us, weeping at his feet'.

He dares not be confident about them meeting here, although the indications are promising.

Charles would have 'gone mourning ALL my days, had not providence unexpectedly led me to [Garth]; where MY FRIEND exhorted me from my despair'. If their marriage does not after all take place, he must reconcile himself to enjoying no happiness this side of the grave.
