Scope and Content

Incomplete letter from [Ireland] to [Sarah Gwynne]. A stanza of a hymn is quoted, the first line of which is 'Can you not join me in that?'.

Spiritual matters are discussed. At morning, evening and noon, he calls upon God on Sarah's behalf. She should not fail to meet him [in fellowship] at those times especially noon. Often during the day and at other times, God brings her to Charles's mind. He has experienced 'the sweetness of Christian fellowship' with Sarah and feels strengthened in body and soul to do God's work.

She would smile to see how he is venerated by these people - 'Today they extol us as Gods: they will not stone us before tomorrow'.

He undresses properly every night, in accordance with [Sarah's] instructions, so as to conserve his strength and has so far felt no weariness in preaching to crowds of many thousands every morning. He knows that Sarah will excuse him if he hangs on here a month longer 'in this plenteous harvest'. He expects to embark for his return to [Wales] on October 2.
