The correspondence relates to the fundraising efforts undertaken by Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton for the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1916.
This expedition aimed to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea via the South Pole. When the expedition ship Endurance was crushed in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea his goal was abandoned.
