Administrative / Biographical History

David Shephard (1940-97) was a member of the Executive Council of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) for the period 1975-94. David Shephard belonged to the East Sussex Fire Brigade and, in addition to his membership of the Executive Council and numerous sub-committees, he was a prominent and active member of the union at a regional level. He was Regional Education Officer, Press and Firefighter Representative, and Brigade Secretary inter alia.

Conditions Governing Access

Access : Open except that there is a fifteen year closure period for the minutes series in the archive. The Fire Brigades Union retains its own set of Executive Council minutes at its headquarters. In addition, a thirty year closure period has been placed on a file on legal cases involving FBU members.

There is an interim list of David Shephard's papers has a temporary reference number (MSS.346C) pending full cataloguing and absorption into the FBU archive.

Custodial History

Some of these papers were collected by David Shephard as part of an MA research project. The David Shephard archive was deposited by Mrs. Linda Shephard as a bequest to the Centre in April 1998. Researchers should note that David Shephard also contributed material to the main Fire Brigades Union archive (MSS.346).
