The correspondence concerned an allegation that Clive had illicitly received some of the jewels sent to the Company by Shuja ud-Daula as security for his payment of the remainder of the sum pledged by the treaty of 1765. Isaac Sage, as Director of the Factory at Benares where the security was stored gave a statement to Smeaton that such was not the case. It seems likely that the copy was made by Sage, since the beginning of the signature of the letter from Smeaton is an erased letter I.
Copies of correspondence between Isaac Sage and Mr A. Smeaton.
