Although only one of the groupings calls itself Select Committee Proceedings, it seems probable that all three are in fact minutes of the same Committee; there is some duplication between ff.94-98 and ff.104-108 while the small number and consistent membership of the committee reinforce this impression. The Select Committee of Fort William was formed in 1756 to negotiate with Indian and European powers in the light of imminent war with France. An initial aim was the recapture of Fort William and thereafter the Committee had considerable freedom of action in all matters relating to the maintenance of Company position and negotiation with foreign powers.
