By the time Wilkinson became director of the Department of Haematology he had been engaging in professional research into pernicious anaemia for several years. His earlier research carried out whilst he was director of the Department of Clinical Investigations and Research was predominantly focused on the treatment of pernicious anaemia with hog's stomach and liver extracts (see JFW/2/5/1). Here the emphasis of the research falls into three main areas, namely, the use of vitamin B12 in its treatment, the possible causal links between pernicious anaemia and cancers, particularly gastric cancer, and the relationship between pernicious anaemia and diabetes mellitus. Wilkinson published innumerable articles during this period, many in conjunction with others, that detail the progress and results of his research.
