Pernicious Anaemia, Pig's Stomach

Scope and Content

Annotated copies of Wilkinson's work 'Pernicious Anaemia: Treatment with Preparations of Hog's Stomach', in both English and German. There is also a proof copy of the German version, 'Über die Behandlung der Perniziösen Anämie mit Schweinemagen' published in Klinische Wochenschrift, 1931, Vol. 10(17). The English version was published as 'The Treatment of Pernicious Anaemia with Hog's Stomach, Report of 108 Cases' in British Medical Journal, 1931, Vol. 1(3654) pp.85-91. There is a note attached to the English version to say that since the publication of the original report the series has been extended to 136 cases and the periods of observation increased in each case.

There are additional notes on specific cases and the data obtained during the investigations, in particular blood results and fractional gastric analyses. There are also a number of press cuttings relating to Wilkinson's work on pernicious anaemia and announcement of the discovery of a new remedy for a previously incurable disease, with particular mention given to his successful treatment of Alderman William Greenwood of the Salford City Council.
