Scope and Content

Correspondence between Wilkinson and the Medical Research Council, namely Dr F.H.K. Green and F.J.C. Herrald, concerning the extension of the grant for the assistance of Dr Tudor S.G. Jones, the proposed work of Jones, the extension of the grant for the assistance of Mr W.S.M. Grieve, the annual report, the Walter Fletcher Memorial, possible trials of desoxycorticosterone-acetate in Addison's disease for the Therapeutic Trials Committee, and the departure of Dr Jones and his possible replacement with Dr Francis Aylward. The annual report gives a thorough account of the work done by the department including investigations into aetiology and ultimate prognosis of pernicious anaemia and the occurrence of other diseases, the improvement of liver and stomach preparations, haemopoietin, the gastric 'intrinsic' factor in gastric juice, achrestic and aplastic anaemias, a haemolytic (spherocytic) jaundice, the morphology of sternal bone-marrow in blood diseases, haemolytic anaemia with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria of the Marchiafava type, the value of synthetic desoxycorticosterone in the treatment of Addison's disease, vitamin B1 content of the blood, and vitamin C metabolism in certain conditions.
