Wilkinson began his research into Addison's Disease in 1934 at the request of the Therapeutic Trials Committee of the Medical Research Council. The research focused specifically on the value of extracts of suprarenal cortex in the treatment of the disease and similar work was carried out simultaneously by Professor T.R. Elliott of the University College Hospital, London, Dr Robert Hutchison and Dr S. Levy Simpson of the London Hospital, and Professor D. Murray Lyon of the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
See JFW/5/2/3 for correspondence between Wilkinson and the Therapeutic Trials Committee of the MRC regarding the details of the trial.
