Initial or control blood counts taken for workers at Springfield at the beginning of the research in 1942, with categories of workers including: smoke 19; smoke 18; D.A. plant; red lead mixers; general electrical department; drains; plumbing department; instrument department; assembly; shift managers; plant managers; dressers and bathroom attendants; men; and women. There are also some repeat counts included from later in the year. Unlike the others Springfield was a new factory and so the initial control counts taken of workers there generally speaking were representative of their health prior to exposure.
