Scope and Content

Bound minute books containing minutes of the Board of Braddan Parish Commissioners.

Public meetings of the Commissioners were held monthly. Minutes for these meetings can be found in the main sequence of minute books in S114/1. The minutes begin from the establishment of the Commissioners in 1894. The minute books from April 1913 to March 1934 are missing from the sequence and their whereabouts is unknown. The sequence of minutes of meetings of the Commissioners held in private begins in May 1986. The meetings typically discuss personal or sensitive matters that cannot be discussed in meetings attended by the public due to Data Protection legislation.

Administrative / Biographical History

Braddan Parish Commissioners were established in 1894 by provision laid down under the Local Government Amendment Act. Meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held monthly. Minutes in this series were taken during the meetings by the Clerk and were approved and signed at the following Board meeting.

Minutes typically discuss all of the activities and functions of the local authority, including (but not limited to):
- housing;
- rates;
- refuse collection;
- street lighting;
- parks, playgrounds and other leisure facilities;
- property searches;
- environmental health;
- planning applications;
- public information and advice;
- byelaw enforcement; and
- abandoned vehicles.

Custodial History

The records comprising this series were fully transferred to the IOMPRO under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1999 on 13 Sep 2017 on the authority of the Clerk to Braddan Parish Commissioners. Prior to transfer to the Public Record Office they were held at the Braddan Commissioners Office, Close Corran, Braddan, IM4 4LZ.
