This collection includes: National Board for Prices and Incomes 'Payments by Results' case studies and memoranda, 1966-1969; British Leyland (Austin-Morris) Engines Division - final reports in industrial relations by Allan Flanders, Alan Fox, Ian Brough, 1970; Merseyside earnings data collected by Derek Robinson, 1962-1964; IRRU survey of shop stewards, 1976.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Arthur Brown was born in 1945 and educated at Leeds Grammar School and Wadham College, Oxford. He was an economic assistant at the National Board for Prices and Incomes, 1966-1968 and a research associate (and later a research fellow) at the University of Warwick from 1968. William Brown's colleagues in these years included Allan Flanders and Hugh Clegg, some of whose research files on industrial relations are included in this collection. William Brown was appointed as the Director of the Industrial Relations Research Unit (IRRU) in 1981. Four years later he was elected as a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge and also became the Montague Burton Professor of Industrial Relations at the University of Cambridge. A member of the Low Pay Commission from 1997, Professor Brown became the Master of Darwin College, Cambridge in 2000. He was awarded the CBE in 2002.
