The Joint Committee on Tutorial Classes was established in 1909 to co-ordinate extra-mural education undertaken in collaboration by the University and local branches of the Workers' Educational Association (W.E.A). The University contributed teachers to the W.E.A.'s tutorial classes, which were responsible for two year courses mostly in history and social sciences. The Committee was superseded by the Committee on Adult Education. Originally the Committee comprised seven University representatives, and seven members of local working class organizations (including the W.E.A.).
