Hillman Papers

Scope and Content

The collection includes six completed printed Letts Indian and Colonial Rough Diary volumes, 1920-21, 1923-26, a bundle of newspaper cuttings by 'Mariner' from English language Chinese newspapers, a map of Hong Kong, and a typescript account, extracted from his diary, of events around the fighting at Shanghai 12 August-25 August 1937.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hillman was stationed in the Far East for a number of years. As 'Mariner' he contributed articles to the North China Daily Mail and other local (English language) newspapers.

Acquisition Information

The papers were loaned by a private owner to Professor Christopher Platt of the Department of History, and from him were passed to one 'Richard H'. At this point four of the ten diaries seem to have become lost, as the Library only received six diaries when the collection was deposited in October 1971.
