Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Holding company for the Lithgow family business in shipping and related industries. Formed in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde , Scotland in 1918, the company eventually moved operations to Glasgow, Scotland .
Lithgows (Holdings) Ltd was organised in three divisions: trading companies, non-trading companies and associated companies.
Following the 1970 merger between Lithgows Ltd , Port Glasgow, and Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Co Ltd , Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, Lithgows (Holdings) Ltd was allocated a shareholding in the venture. By 1973, Lithgows (Holdings) Ltd held interests in both Scott Lithgow Ltd and Scott Lithgow Drydocks Ltd Greenock, associated companies of the former.
In 1983, Lithgows (Holdings) Ltd changed its name to Lithgows Ltd and continues to exist as a holding company.
