Certificates (1998-8062-8063)

  • 1999-8063: Certificate, Great Eastern Railway Certificate of Merit, to certify that A O Ladell after attending a course of Lectures on the Rules and Regulations affecting the safe working of Railways, including the principles of interlocking of points and signals, has passed an Examination on these subjects, and has been awarded a Prize, 2nd April 1909.
  • 1999-8062: Certificate, London & North Eastern Railway Air Raid Precautions, to certify that Arthur Osborne Ladell has attended a course in anti-gas training organised by the London & North Eastern Railway Company and has qualified to render assistance on emergency, January 23rd 1940.

Administrative / Biographical History

Arthur Osborne Ladell worked for the Great Eastern Railway (GER) and subsequently for the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) when the GER was absorbed into the LNER in 1921. He was recruited into the Great Eastern Railway in 1895 after enquiring to the Goods Managers Office. At this time he appears to have lived in Harold Wood, Essex. By 1909 Ladell appears to have been recruited at and/or receiving training in the Mineral Manager’s Office, Liverpool Street Station, London. He was in employment with the LNER in 1940 and received a certificate in anti-gas training in the same year.

These items were transferred to the NRM by a relative of Arthur Osborne Ladell. They were originally donated with printed material e.g. programmes, booklets and guides and also photographs probably originating from Ladell and other members of the family who worked on the railway. These were separated and accessioned separately. Details of printed material deposited are as follows (these are repeated in the related unit of description).
