Melville play material

Scope and Content

Assignments and licensing generated a large amount of paperwork which has been sorted into two sections. The paperwork relating to assignments includes letters from the authors and lists of plays assigned; the correspondents include Sir Augustus Harris, Samuel French and Colin Hazelwood. The licences are arranged in chronological order.

Also included in this section are a series of pictures, mainly taken from The Sketch of pantomimes in London and the Provinces. These show cast members and also details about the pantomime genre.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Melvilles worked with a number of playwrights to provide material for their productions. Plays were all required to be licensed by the Lord Chamberlain. The licence corresponds to both the theatre and the play. It appears, however, that once the licence was obtained the content of the play did not always correspond with what the Lord Chamberlain had licensed.
