Publicity Material

Scope and Content

Publicity materials were collected and kept by the Melvilles, creating a large selection for many of their plays. The flyers often give a lot of information about cast members including photographs and favourable press reviews are often included.

In this section there are two large albums full of galleyproofs with some extra material on printing charges and amounts. These are specifically associated with productions of Melville plays, including the 'Bad Woman' dramas written by Frederick and Walter Melville.

There is also an album of pre play publicity collected by a member of the family for a large number of plays they had seen in 1905. These are not only Melville plays and include interesting items such as the farewell performances of Henry Irving in this year.

Administrative / Biographical History

Plays generated a lot of publicity material: there were advertisements, posters and programmes. Printers kept a selection of galleyproofs which the play manager could choose to use in their publicity. These were then made up into postcards, programmes, posters and flyers.

Please note that Melville posters and programmes are filed seperately under UKC/MEL/POS and UKC/MEL/PLAYS/PRG.
