Administrative / Biographical History

The Students' Representative Council (SRC) for day students of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College was formed in 1893, and a separate body for evening students (ESRC) existed for many years in parallel with it until the two amalgamated during the 1940s. The SRC organised reunions of former students, dances and other social functions and published the student magazine. They mounted a successful campaign in 1953 for a new Students' Union Building, which was formally opened in John Street in May 1959. At the same time, the SRC was renamed the Students' Association. The Association amalgamated with the SRC of the Scottish College of Commerce in 1964, to form the Students' Association of the University of Strathclyde.
