Administrative / Biographical History

Cardiff Universities Social Services (CUSS) began as a student volunteering project in 1967, jointly operated by University College Cardiff (now Cardiff University) and University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology. It operated several schemes aimed at improving the lives of children and adults with learning disabilities. In July 1974 CUSS used a University College Cardiff-owned property at 12 Ruthin Gardens to accommodate four students alongside five former-residents of Ely long stay hospital, with the aim of supporting their transition to community living. From 1976 this venture was carried out in partnership with South Glamorgan County Council. This was the first small 'Community Group Home' for people with a learning disability in the UK, and possibly the first in Europe. Currently operating as the Innovate Trust .
